Q: What is the Queen’s Summer Research Internship (SRI)?
A: The SRI is a structured, hands-on research experience designed for undergraduate students interested in medicine and research. Interns work alongside experienced mentors at The Queen’s Medical Center to gain practical skills and exposure to real-world research.
Q: Who is eligible to apply for the program?
A: The program is open to students currently enrolled in an accredited college or university. Applicants must be a resident of Hawaiʻi and have a minimum 3.3 GPA.
Q: What are the program dates?
A: The internship typically runs for 8 weeks during the summer, starting in mid-June and ending in early August. Exact dates will be posted in the program description.
Q: Where does the program take place?
A: The program is a hybrid format of virtual and in-person activities. Most research projects are based at The Queen’s Medical Center’s main campus in Honolulu. Some activities take place at the UH Kakaʻako campus, and there will be a few cultural activiites held at off-campus locations.
Q: How do I apply for the SRI program?
A: Applications are submitted online through REDCap. The link to the application will be included in the program description (PDF). You’ll need to complete the application form and upload the required documents by the application deadline.

A: The program description with the link to the online application is typically available by mid-December.

Q: How are applicants selected?
A: Applications that meet all eligibility requirements will be competitively scored based on several criteria. Interviews may be conducted for finalists.
Q: Can I apply if I am not an undergraduate student?
A: The program is only open to undergraduate students and recently graduated students that are not currently enrolled in a graduate program.
Q: When will applicants be notified?
A: Applicants will be selected and notified in March.
Q: When do I need to make a decision?
A: Selected students must confirm their acceptance into the program by March 15. Applicants will continue to be notified via email until all available spots are filled.
Q: What types of research projects are available?
A: Projects vary each year and may include clinical research, retrospective studies, and data analysis in areas such as cardiology, oncology, and neuroscience.
Q: Will I be assigned a mentor or choose my own?
A: Interns are matched with mentors based on research interests and project availability.
Q: Is the program full-time or part-time?
A: The internship is full-time, typically 40 hours per week.

A: Yes, all interns must attend an orientation and complete required trainings before starting research activities.

A: Yes, interns receive a $2,000 stipend after successful completion of the program.

A: Housing and travel are not provided. Interns are responsible for their own accommodations and transportation.
Q: What is the daily schedule of an intern?
A: Generally, interns participate in lectures and other SRI activities in the morning, then work on their research projects with their mentors in the afternoon.
Q: Are there required presentations or reports at the end of the program?
A: Yes, interns present their research findings at the SRI Symposium at the end of the program and are required to submit a final written report.
Q: What is the dress code?
A: Business casual attire is required in most settings. Clinical job shadowing may require additional safety gear which will be provided by Queen’s. Personal scrubs are recommended for some clinical settings, but are not required.
